"Osamu Tezuka, född 3 november 1928, död 8 februari 1989. En av Japans mest kända och inflytelserika animatörer, producerade åtskilliga volymer med manga och dussintalet animerade filmer och tv-serier. Hans mest kända verk torde vara Astro Boy som fick stor uppmärksamhet och sändes i flertalet länder. Osamu Tezuka har ofta benämts som Japans Walt Disney och han anses allmänt vara den person som la grunden till hela manga-vågen i Asien."

- Jag har egentligen inte läst en serietidning sedan salig Kalle Anka, 91:an, Tarzan och Don Martin. Jag har tyckt om estetiken i mangaserierna men aldrig läst nåt album, bara kollat på bilderna. Jag tycker moderna västerländska vuxenserier är trista och fula i regel. Men så av en slump råkade jag igår på 'Phoenix - A tale of the future' av Osamu Tezuka. Ett fantastiskt seriealbum! Den första serie jag läst från pärm till pärm på 15 år. Så grymt tecknad och en sån jävla berättelse! (Och så spännande; andra delen av tretton!) Så himla bra, läs den!

"The idea behind Phoenix (or “Hi no Tori” as it’s known by in Japan) comes from the universal concept of the fire bird. As Tezuka himself explains, “Actually, every country has a legend about a mysterious bird such as the Phoenix. In these legends, the symbol of supernatural life-force takes form as a bird…I wanted utilize this Phoenix to portray Japanese history in my own way.” If the idea of documenting Japan’s history wasn’t ambitious enough, Tezuka also envisioned Phoenix as his study of what it means to be alive. Life had always been an important aspect of Tezuka’s stories, most likely a product of the medical training Tezuka had received. However, he would take his fascination with life to a new level with Phoenix. He envisioned a series of interconnecting tales from all eras of human history that would all be tied together by the mystical Phoenix, the manifestation of life. These stories, set in times ranging from ancient history to the distant future, would eventually be tied together by a final volume. Furthermore, Tezuka decided to create Phoenix over the course of his lifetime so that the manga’s progression paralleled Tezuka’s growth as a human being."
